The City of Hamilton has completed a $6 million project to modernize its traffic controls, upgrading all 99 signals to a Centralized Traffic Signal System. This new system offers advantages such as smarter traffic signals connected to a central controller, facilitating real- time adjustments to signal timing and emergency vehicle preemption. The project also includes state- of-the-art signal hardware, camera traffic detection, ADA accessible pedestrian ramps, and a dynamic message sign displaying travel time information. High Street, from Hampshire Drive to Eaton Avenue, has seen a 20 percent reduction in travel time, showcasing the project's success. Additionally, the City has experienced reduced operational costs with the implementation of the new signal equipment.
