Teacher Spotlight - Steve Heckman

Teacher Spotlight - Steve Heckman

Hamilton High School’s Steve Heckman is a prime example of a teacher who is engaged in his school community and willing to help his students learn and grow as they prepare for their future. Graduating from the University of Toledo, Mr. Heckman began his teaching career almost 35 years ago; starting at Hamilton in the 1990-1991 school year, Mr. Heckman has been with us for the vast majority of his career.

Doubling as the softball coach, Mr. Heckman encourages his students to be their very best both in and out of the classroom, and had this to say when asked about what inspired him to become a teacher and what he enjoys most about it: “I have always enjoyed the school environment, helping students both academically and athletically. Every student and athlete is unique to themselves. Everyone brings something to the table, and learning and experiencing that is very rewarding”. Steve’s favorite part of being a teacher is the same as the obstacles he faces in his career; when a student doesn’t have a particularly straight path to success, Mr. Heckman enjoys leading them to it and seeing the progress they make, even if it isn’t easy. Steve hopes that his students, both past and present, will recognize the effort he puts in for them and that they know he tried his best as both a teacher and a coach.

Without teachers like Steve Heckman, many students would be lost trying to find what their purpose is in life. Having such devoted teachers in high school could be what makes or breaks a student, and Hamilton High is incredibly fortunate to have someone like Steve Heckman on the staff.
