The beginnings of a new school year can, without a doubt, prove to be an adjustment. But for teachers, administrators and staff at Wilson Middle School, those adjustments have been met head on and with a heart full of optimism.
In years past, Hamilton’s other Middle School, Garfield, has been home to ELL students (English Language Learner). However, this year, in a move to have students attend their “Home School”, Wilson was also able to welcome students who are working hard to learn the English language. It’s a move that not only helps students build on the friendships they’ve made in their neighborhoods, but it gives the students a support system that’s much closer to home.
One of the teachers that’s working hard to support these incoming Middle Schoolers, is Ms. Sam Wyatt. Ms. Wyatt has been helping students as they not only work on adjusting to a new school (which can be tough all on its own), but also as they work to learn English, a language that is known for being extremely difficult to master. Her assistance doesn’t stop with the kids though, she’s also been helping the teachers.
It’s no secret that teachers are already challenged with presenting materials to a wide variety of personalities and different learning types. But then add in students who speak a different language…the language barrier, at times, can feel as heartbreaking as it does frustrating. But Ms. Wyatt is working hard to help bridge the gap so that everyone can find success in the classroom and feel like they’re growing as both teachers and students.
Also helping bridge the gap, is Native Language Support Specialist, Ms. Nora Mendoza. Ms. Mendoza works to connect with the families of students who are working to learn English. She’s not only a support system for students while they’re at Wilson, but she also works to make sure these students have a strong support system at home as well. An aspect of the educational process that is always so important. There may be a language barrier at times, but the love of a parent is universal. They want to help, they just need to know how. Ms. Mendoza is helping them find those much appreciated tools.
From the Teacher Teams, to the Librarian (Ms. Angel Thompson), to the Staff that makes up Wilson Middle School, everyone has stepped up to support these amazing young people and created an environment that feels conducive to learning. Whether it's classroom materials that everyone can understand, or books in the Library that are relevant to students' cultures, Wilson has done their best to meet their students' needs.
Change is rarely easy. Sometimes it can be hard. But the staff at Wilson Middle School is showing up day after day with hearts full of hope, ready to be exactly who their students need them to be. The result…is a school that is flourishing with unique and different cultures, educational breakthroughs that are inspiring, and a welcoming, immersive environment that gives all students the courage to learn something new.
